What is Laguna Herbal’s philosophy when formulating products?
Laguna Herbals was founded to research and develop safe and effective health and wellness products, with formulations built on using the highest quality natural and organic ingredients.  All of our ingredients are plant or mineral based and we avoid using any harmful or questionable chemicals.  As an independent company we will never compromise the principles behind our products and their ability to provide results.

Where are Laguna Herbal products made?
Laguna Herbals is a woman owned and operated business located in Laguna Beach, CA.  All of our products are formulated and produced in the USA.

How should I store my Laguna Herbals products?
We suggest storing your products at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.

What is the expiration of the product?
The shelf-life of our SPF sunscreen products is 3 years.  As with all skin care products, the best results are usually achieved if used within 6 months after opening.

Aren’t all Sunscreens the same? Why should I use Laguna Herbals Sunscreen?
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen with: (1) Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays); (2) SPF 30 or higher and (3) proven water resistance.  All of these are great attributes for any sunscreen, but studies have shown active ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate and homosalate found in many sunscreens are known to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream which can disrupt the body’s hormonal system and can irritate the skin causing conditions such as eczema.  In fact, studies have shown that 95% of Americans have at least one of these chemicals in their bloodstream (for more on the effects of common sunscreen chemicals click here).   That’s why we developed our Laguna Herbals sunscreen.

You should use Laguna Herbals sunscreen because we developed it to provide you with effective sun protection with no harmful chemicals.  Laguna Herbals sunscreen contains only non-nano zinc oxide plus 5 organic ingredients (click here for ‘Our Ingredients’ to see more details) that are very gentle on the skin.  The ingredients in our sunscreen also moisturize, heal, soothe and soften the skin.  The inactive ingredients provide a protective barrier between the skin and other environmental elements such as chlorine and salt water.  Our sunscreens are FDA rated “very water resistant”, allowing for 80 mins of swimming or sweating before needing reapplication.

What does UVA and UVB mean?
UVA and UVB are the breakdown of the sun’s rays.  UVA stands for Ultraviolet “A” rays.  UVA rays comprise about 98% of the rays that reach the earth.  They are known as aging rays because they are able to penetrate the deepest layer of the skin and can increase the effects of aging.  UVB stands for Ultraviolet “B” rays.  UVB rays are shorter rays and are known as the burning rays because they are responsible for melanin production (pigmentation).  These rays are also responsible for producing a tan, which is actually a sign of sun damage.  Contrary to popular belief, UVA rays can penetrate glass and light clothing, so it is important to always use sun protection.

When should I use sunscreen?
The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round.  Even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin with harmful short term and long term effects on the human body.  Snow, sand, and water increase the need for sunscreen because they reflect the sun’s rays.   Sunscreen should be applied every day.

Will Laguna Herbals sunscreen irritate my skin?
Many sunscreen brands contain chemical based active and inactive ingredients.  Active ingredients (UVA/UVB filters) such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octocrylene and avobenzone get absorbed into the skin and often cause skin rashes (for more on the effects of sunscreen chemicals click here).  Our sunscreen contains the active ingredient non-nano zinc oxide (for more on non nano zinc oxide click here).  We have chosen this active ingredient because it sits on top of the skin reflecting UVA and UVB light and won’t cause rashes, as it doesn’t enter the bloodstream.  Furthermore, our formula is fragrance free, reducing the potential for allergic reactions.

Why do we use non-nano zinc oxide?
At Laguna Herbals, we choose to use zinc oxide with a particle size over 100nm (non-nano), which cannot permeate the skin and therefore won’t cause a rash or other allergic reaction in most users.  Zinc oxide is the best broad spectrum UVA and UVB reflector approved for use as a sunscreen by the Food and Drug Administration.  Non-nano zinc oxide sits on top of the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB light.

Isn't zinc too white on the skin?
Some sunscreen brands that contain zinc oxide are difficult to rub in and leave a white tint on your skin.  Because of our unique blend of ingredients, our sunscreen is easily applied and will dry clear on the skin.

Is a high-number SPF better than a low-number one?
Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97 percent of the sun’s rays.  Higher-number SPFs block slightly more of the sun’s rays.  It is also important to remember that high-number SPFs last the same amount of time as low-number SPFs.  All sunscreens should be applied approximately every two hours or according instructions on the label.  Even on cloudy days and after swimming or sweating, sunscreen needs to be applied.

How should I apply Laguna Herbals sunscreen?
Laguna Herbals sunscreen should be applied liberally over your face and body.  A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount to get used to how it adheres to your skin.  If you put too much on at once you may notice a white residue which will dissipate in a few minutes.  The wide diameter stick will provide quick and even coverage.  Our sunscreen is rated “very water resistant”.  This is the FDA’s highest water resistance rating for a sunscreen.  As with all sunscreen, the recommendation is that it be applied every two hours or after 80 minutes (if it is “very water resistant”) of swimming or sweating.  Contrary to popular belief, UVA rays can penetrate glass and light clothing, so it is important to always use sun protection when outside.

How long prior to sun exposure do I need to apply my sunscreen?
Generally, it is recommended to apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure.

Do I need sunscreen if I have a darker skin tone or generally don’t get sun burns?
Although your skin may not redden or burn as easily as fair skin, you are still being exposed to UVA and UVB rays, which can cause wrinkles and cellular defects such as skin cancer.

Why don't you make spray-on sunscreen?
We feel that there is a safety concern with the aerosol spray sunscreens as they are too easy to inhale into the lungs, especially for kids.  This type of spray-on sunscreen also goes on invisibly making it difficult to determine how much has been applied and where, often resulting in inadequate protection.
